Conventions continue to draw countless visitors
and Trekkies around the world. All sorts of
merchandise, including Star Trek posters, action

its cast and many adventures. This memorabilia
reminds us of how television was revolutionized
by this futuristic show. Fans can’t help
but be lured by a show that brought science
fiction to mainstream culture.
Failure before success
The original Star Trek was in the planning stages
for some six years before first airing as a
television series in 1966. Low ratings caused
the network to cancel the original series in
its third season. The saga did not end there:
the show became popular during reruns. Five
Star Trek spin-offs were created to satisfy
the craving of viewers who simply could not
get enough.
Breaking
boundaries
The show tore down barriers as its
creator, Gene Roddenberry, envisioned a multi-racial
and mixed-gender crew. His assumption was that
racism and sexism would not exist in the 23rd
century. He also produced characters from alien
races, including Spock. The characters were
all united under the banner of the United Federation
of Planets, a sort of universal alliance.
Ahead of its time
Star Trek introduced its audience to sophisticated technologies that we
currently enjoy, including the mobile phone. One of its most famous pieces
of equipment was the teleportation device, which made viewers everywhere
dream about being able to travel at incredibly high speeds. The ship’s
faster-than-light speed allowed it to travel across the galaxy at the
press of a button. Then there was the matter transporter, where crew members
beamed from place to place. At the first sign of trouble, Transporter
Chief Scotty would beam up Captain Kirk following his famous "Beam
me up, Scotty!"
Cast
Star Trek follows the adventures of
the Starship Enterprise and its crew. There
are numerous characters, each with specific
functions. The show’s three main characters
were Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. Kirk, the captain
and commanding officer of the Enterprise, was
passionate and often aggressive. Spock was the
logical science officer and second-in-command.
Chief Medical Officer McCoy was sarcastic but
always compassionate. The three often clashed
in various situations, forcing Kirk to make
tough decisions. Star Trek turned its largely
unknown cast into celebrities.
