The Mystery behind Lost
The weekly television show ‘Lost’
has redefined action television by merging movie-type
scenarios with a captivating series. Its multi-layered
storylines, rich mythology and endless action
have thrust the show onto another playing field
faster than creators had anticipated. This suspense-filled,
action-packed and science fiction-based drama
will rivet viewers for as long as it airs. Abundant
merchandise has been created following the success
of the show. Lost posters, novels, board games,
video games and other products have all become
incredibly popular.
On location
Lost is filmed almost entirely on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. Cave scenes
in the first season were actually filmed at a soundstage built in an empty
warehouse in the United States. The soundstage and production offices
have since moved to Hawaiian film studios. Various urban areas in and
around Honolulu are used as stand-ins for locations around the world.
Many of the show’s writers have journeyed to Hawaii in a quest to
find inspiring locations where episodes can be set. Lost posters depict
scenes of a picture-perfect paradise, far from the survivors’ realities.
An
expensive hour
The two-part pilot episode of Lost was the most
expensive in ABC’s history. It reportedly
cost three times as much as an average hour-long
pilot to produce. The show is one of the network’s
most expensive series. The show’s use
of various locations, mainly in Hawaii, and
its huge cast and crew contribute to the phenomenal
costs of an hour of entertainment. However,
fantastic viewer ratings continue to prove its
success and allow for costly filming budgets.
Viewers have their say
The series unravels with its complex and mysterious storylines that leave
numerous questions unanswered and problems unresolved. The show’s
writers and stars encourage viewers and TV critics to join the debate
in solving the show’s many mysteries. Writers often interact with
fans online to discuss the theories of the show. These theories usually
relate to the nature of the island, the origins of its so-called monster,
the "Others", the meaning of the numbers, and the reasons for
both the crash and the survival of some passengers. Although viewers have
presented numerous theories, the show’s creators point out that
many of them simply aren’t plausible.
Flight 815
Oceanic Airlines was a fictional airline created
for the show. After suffering several instrument
failures, Flight 815 crashed on its way to Los
Angeles from Sydney, somewhere in the Pacific
Ocean. No one knows exactly how many people
were on board the plane, although survivors
emerged from all three scattered parts of the
destroyed plane. The producers have created
an official site for Oceanic Airlines and its
Flight 815, and have riddled it with hidden
messages.

Lost posters and merchandise
The show’s explosive success has created a phenomenal surge
in merchandise sales. Lost posters are among the most popular items in
demand. Several other types of products, such as a full line of character
action figures, a video game and a board game, are being developed. The
popularity of Lost rests in its talented acting, original ideas, and exceptional
writing. No mystery there.
