I Love Lucy was the most popular American comedies of all time. Lucille Ball, her husband Desi Arnaz, along with Vivian Vance and William Frawley captured our hearts and made us laugh long before the modern sitcom arrived. Although it only ran from 1951 to 1957, the show has gained fame since it ended. The merchandise produced at the time continues to enthrall fans everywhere. I Love Lucy posters are just one example of how the most memorable moments of the show live on.

Lucille and Desi
Lucille Ball was a perfectionist. When the show featured guest stars, Lucille would try to give them advice to get more laughs out of the audience. The show’s success made Ball and Arnaz wealthy enough to purchase the studio where they recorded the show, and they renamed it Desilu. At the time, a mixed marriage between Lucy and Desi sparked controversy and some people worried that American audiences would not believe the marriage. Creators were also concerned that not all audience members would understand Arnaz's heavy Cuban accent. In the end, all critics were proved wrong as the show continues to be referenced in mainstream media, especially in modern sitcoms.

Fred and Ethel
Lucille Ball - I Love Lucy Lucille Ball originally did not want Vivian Vance to play the role of Ethel Mertz because Ball felt she was “too attractive for the role.” As neighbors and good friends, Vivian Vance and William Frawley added the perfect balance to Lucy and Desi’s characters, providing great wit and humor. Ironically, the actors portraying Fred and Ethel Mertz did not get along. These feelings followed them on the set and added a believable element to their on-screen bickering and volatile relationship.

Simply innovative
I Love Lucy was a show ahead of its time. Not only did it pioneer the use of three cameras simultaneously, but it also used 35 mm film and recorded in front of a live studio audience. It was a time when TV shows used recorded audience reactions. The scenes were often performed in sequence, like plays, unusual for comedies at that time. The cast rarely took retakes and dialogue mistakes were ignored in order to continue filming. I Love Lucy was one of the first TV shows to be filmed in Hollywood; most of them were filmed in New York. Desi Arnaz invented the rerun during Lucille’s pregnancy by re-airing certain episodes from the first season to allow her some rest.
