American Idol Posters beat the CompetitionAmerican Idol has become one of the biggest and most popular reality shows of all time. The television series originated in the United Kingdom as a singing contest to determine the best "undiscovered" young singers in the country. In recent years, it has become one of the most highly publicized music competitions in the world, and many countries have developed their own versions of Idol. The judges Paula Abdul is a sympathetic and compassionate judge who tries to find something positive in every performance of idol wannabes. Clay has enjoyed great popularity, emerging as one of the show's true breakout stars. Surprisingly, very little has been heard of Ruben. Season 2 also introduced William Hung who became popular following his appalling rendition of Ricky Martin's "She Bangs." His performance, as well as his attitude facing criticisms, landed him a record deal and many fans. Ironically, a lack ofSimon's talent granted Hung more fame than most of the other finalists. The following seasons have seen idols such as Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood, and Taylor Hicks capture the spotlight with music styles that mainstream audiences have enjoyed, thanks to the show.
