The Amazing Race

The world’s most extensive and far-reaching competition
“It’s not how far they go… it’s what happens along the way!” exclaims the tagline for the CBS’s Emmy award winning reality-TV series The Amazing Race. First aired in 2001, The Amazing Race pits eleven teams of two against each other in one of the world’s most extensive and far-reaching competitions to date. The show was the first winner of the Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program, and has won a litany of other awards for cinematography and direction.

During each episode, the teams must race to a designated pit stop, typically located in a completely different country (and sometimes even on a different continent). The last team to arrive is eliminated from The Amazing Race, while the other players take a mandatory 12-hour rest before embarking on the next leg. Along the way, the teams must take part in various challenges, usually involving the cultural traditions of whatever country in which the race is taking place. The last team remaining wins one million dollars.

The Amazing Race Teams
One of the most striking aspects about The Amazing Race, besides truly breathtaking cinematography, is the diversity among its competitors. Contestants come from a variety of cultures, lifestyles and ages, while the teams themselves include a wide assortment of personal relationships. Frat brothers, soccer moms, family members, married couples, divorced couples, best friends and business partners are just few examples of the teams that take part in The Amazing Race. Team members must complete all tasks in the race together unless instructed to do otherwise – which can lead to quite a bit of tension among team members as the pressure of the race heats up! Everyone stands a winning chance, though, because while many of the challenges are physically straining, the game can be tricky; so a cool head, a bit of logic and a lot of patience can be the difference between a million dollars and nothing at all.
